She's Number 1

by Savannah

After a match truly deserving to be called a Grand Slam final Serena Williams overcame the spirited challenge of Jelena Jankovic to win the Women's championship of the United States Open and reclaim the Number One ranking.
Congratulations Serena!

I was a little surprised that Serena did not give props to Jelena's good playing tonight?

Welcome vw!

Jelena played very very well. She should cut out all the crap and concentrate on honing her skills.

This was the best final we've seen in quite some time. Those were two very good sets.

vw, why can we not just enjoy a match and not think about giving credit to the opponent. Did you see JJ's behaviour during the match. She complained constantly about Serena taking too much time within points, when that was not even the case. She tried to fast serve Serena, she was laughing after points, especially when she won them and did her usual theatrics. Yes, it may have been bad form for Serena not to have said something about JJ's play, but the only thing that JJ had to say about Serena was that Serena took too long between points, she never actually credited Serena for playing a very good match. It was really all about her. Frankly speaking this is not a popularity contest. This is a professional tennis match with lots of money and glory on the line. I am always mystified that every time Serena or Venus wins a match they should be all over themselves in congratulating their opponent. For what. Credit to Serena for saying that in preparing for this match she had her hitting partner have extended rallies with her because she knew that was JJ's game. What did JJ do she went out there and blunted back all of Serena's serve in order to get the point in play. It was a well played match by both ladies and we really should stop this talk about giving opponent's credit. I for one found it very distasteful that when MaryC had started interviewing Serena and told Serena how much she had won, JJ takes the mike and starts querying how much she got? Now that was poor form and just not cricket.

Great, great job by Serena and grabbing the #1 to boot!

Love her beautiful smile, she is just glowing. Thanks for the pictures, Savannah.

1) I don't see that she (or anyone else) needs to congratulate opponent...
2) Agree with Karen about the compliment being there with the comment about the hitting partner.
3) Glad someone else picket up on Jankovic's theatrics.... The most amazing was complaining when Serena went to change racket at the appropriate time (i.e. new balls).... and Serena taking 15s to serve.... (don't they have 25?)

copying my post from Craig's blog
Yes, it was wonderful..... and yes I actually managed to watch the entire match live.... Fantastic!

Any thoughts on Jankovic's antics? Such a pity because I like her game...... That said - interrupting Serena's presentation to ask (twice!) about the amount of her check was one of the strangest and rudest things I've ever seen in a trophy presentation..... Seems she just can't bear for anyone else to get the attention....

Was it just me or did they talk about their clothes while waiting for their trophies? LOL.

cate they did talk about clothes. Serena told JJ that she liked her dress and I think JJ said the same about Serena's dress. Now, that is something you do not hear everyday. I think people misunderstand what great sportsmanship is all about. Sportsmanship is how you conduct yourself during play, and what you say to your opponent afterwards. In her semis, Serena made sure that she apologised face to face to Dinara and at the net with JJ she apologised for celebrating too much. That is sportsmanship. Not giving platitudes to please the masses. That is called PR and is best served by folks who want people to have nice things to say about them when in truth they are anything but true sports persons.

Karen, I guess there can be no comments about Serena on this blog without a massive attack.
BTW JJ did say on court that "she played too good tonight." Check it out.
I will leave this blog to Serena worshippers.
