Sunday's Winners

by Savannah

I didn't watch one final today. I was tired and I wanted to watch Ghana vs Serbia. The World Cup is addictive even for someone like me who only really starts paying attention to soccer in WC years.

You don't like that excuse for not watching the finals at Queens Club, Halle or Birmingham? It's the truth. I made a conscious choice not to watch. It did cross my mind to watch Birmingham but I was too lazy to act on it. Living on European time wears you out you know?

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Apparently the weather held in England and didn't matter in Halle. The Germans have a roof over their center court. Novel idea no? Look it could be worse. At Birmingham they didn't have the right size tarp for their center court and the grass got wet despite the ground being covered. I guess it's a good thing Mardy Fish wasn't playing there.

At any rate here are the singles and doubles winners for the three events.

The Birmingham tennis fans love Maria Sharapova. They love her so much that after her win over Alison Riske on Saturday not many of them hung around to watch Li Na play Aravane Rezai. If they had they would've known their girl was going to face a tough opponent. Maria lost in straight sets to Li, 7-5 and 6-1.
Cara Black and Lisa Raymond defeated Liezel Huber and Bethany Mattek-Sands 63 32 ret.

In a personal triumph Lleyton Hewitt, resident of the Bahamas, defeated Roger Federer at Halle 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. I haven't seen any pictures of Miroslava Federer reading or yawning during today's match. Think I'm kidding? Making this up?

This was during her husband's match against Alejandro Falla.
Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny defeated Martin Damm and Filip Polasek 4-6, 7-5, 10-7

Well somebody had to win and Sam Querrey defeated Mardy Fish at Queens Club 7-6(7), 7-5. I'm just glad it wasn't Fish holding that trophy.
Novak Djokovic and Jonathan Ehrlich won the doubles crown defeating Karol Beck and David Skoch 6-7(6), 6-2, 10-3.

This and That

Fernando Gonzalez will be out for ten weeks with injury. He will miss Davis Cup and Wimbledon. He hopes to be back for Toronto.

Juan Monaco is out for nine weeks with a wrist injury.

Mario Ancic had to withdraw from Queens Club and the tournament in Holland citing a back injury.

Richard Gasquet withdrew from Queens Club with a back injury.

Juan Martin del Potro is out until after the US Open with a wrist injury.

This is what Aravane Rezai will be wearing for the grass court season. I wonder why I started singing "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" when I saw the jacket? I know she loves shiny things but really Aravane?

The matches this morning were great Savannah. The one in Halle was really good. Even though my guy lost I have to say that Hewitt was the much better player today. His first serve was not around in the first set and Fed being Fed took advantage. The second set was going to be a bit like the first except that Hewitt dug in and really started to play with abandon. Fed's first serve deserted him and while he had numerous chances to break the Hewitt serve, he just could not capitalise. Is he in doubt for making the second week of Wimbledon, I doubt it.

I was really upset that most of the folks left after Sharapova's match yesterday. I watched this morning's match (2 screens up at the same time) and man did Na play well or what. She teed off on that Sharapova second serve like it was nothing. As is the norm when Sharapova's serve is under pressure, she starts to double fault. She did look tired today both physically and mentally and just did not seem to have any answers. I do not think she is as match tough as she would like to be especially heading into Wimbledon. If she is not careful and manages her time on court she could very well be out by the second round.

Hardly watched any of Queens. 2 screens open are about all I can spare.

Aravane needs to ditch the dress. It is ugly. She is too much of a beautiful young lady to be wearing this sort of stuff.

Thanks for the recap TennisAce. From your reports I'm sorry I missed them.

You can basically predict how Roger is playing based on Mirka's attitude. Here is the same woman during today's match against the same player, Falla.
