Serena Williams is out of the US Open. I'm assuming her foot injury has not healed enough for her to play. More details, and official announcement will be posted later.

With Serena's withdrawal Caroline Wozniacki will be the top seed at the US Open. A Grand Slam. WTA you will have a lot of 'splaining to do.

Serena Williams withdraws from 2010 US Open
Friday, August 20, 2010
Top-ranked Serena Williams has officially withdrawn from the 2010 US Open as she continues to recover from a cut to her right foot.

Williams cut her foot on a piece of broken glass in July, which required surgery, and has not competed on the WTA Tour since winning her 13th career Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. She is a three-time US Open champion.

"It is with much frustration and deep sadness that I am having to pull out of the US Open," Williams said in a statement released by her publicist. "My doctors have advised against my playing so that my foot can heal."

She called missing the tournament "one of the most devastating moments of my career."

US Open Tournament Director Jim Curley released the following statement regarding Williams' withdrawal:

"We regret that Serena Williams is unable to play the US Open and wish her a speedy recovery. She will be missed, but the tournament is about the competition and the players on the court. This year's US Open will be a memorable event, as it has been every year."

What do you make of that last paragraph Savannah?

Unnecessary? Unprofessional? Or both?

Without a doubt the tournament has lost its brightest light. I knew she was not going to be playing ever since I saw the boot on the foot from pictures of last week. It did not help that Sasha (hitting partner) was back and there was nothing on twitter about practice etc.

A pity as I felt that she had a strong chance of making it 3 majors in a row.

Oh well, the cheering squad (aka commentators) can now cheer the Golden Girl on to victory. Will be interesting to see which Golden Girl gets the cupcake draw this year. The Comeback Mom with the wonky hip or the Money Making machine (as per Forbes) with the dislocated rotator cuff or whatever it is that is wrong with her shoulder).

Oh sorry, I forgot, it is the lights, the heat, and tiredness that makes her suck so much on serve. Phewt.

USO ladies draw just got interesting. I am really hoping that Azarenka can pull it off. I really like her improvements and she is not afraid.

Why TennisAce you're not implying that it will be a prearranged cakewalk for one lucky player are you? The draws are random and if it comes about that the top half of the draw contains all the qualifiers, juniors playing just to test themselves against the women on the main tour, recently returned from injury, it's just the luck of the draw. ;)

TopSpin that last paragraph is what I have come to expect when it comes to either of the Williams sisters. Damning with faint praise.

Look at it this way. Venus is iffy. JJ is not playing well right now. Saint Kim did not run like a gazelle after having her hip heavily taped yesterday. The other Belgian is out for the rest of the year. Dinara? Ana? Of course in tennis anything is possible but really? Then again there's Melanie Oudin. Get my point?

They don't use that boot Serena is wearing for shits and giggles. There was no way she was going to be ready to play Flushing Meadows this year. I'll be nice and say he's trying to make the best of a bad situation.

They don't want someone like JJ or Azaranka, too ethnic.

I'll tell you which one they really really want to win....Danish Sunshine!

LMAO Savannah, I would never imply that the draws are not random. It is just that USO 2007 keeps coming back to me all the time. You know that USO 2007 when the Golden Child had everyone who had not been past the second round of a major in a long time, if ever. The headcases, the also rans, the never was and the No. 1 player at that time, Justine, had every big hitter imaginable on her side of the draw.

Someone somewhere did not tell this little Polish girl with a rat for a pet what was expected and she went out and pulled the upset of the tournament by taking out the Golden Child.

It will be interesting to see what is done this year.

As for the men's draw, I can say it here and now that none of the top 4 will have it easy. The men are finally beginning to step up and beat the top guys and for me, it is good to see. I was bemoaning the lack of cojones of the men's tour for some time but seeing Marcos taking out Fed earlier this year and now taking out Nadal. Berdych taking Fed out in Miami and then again at Wimbledon but losing in Toronto. Mardy Fish, losing weight and taking names. Who knew?

I mean the men's game just got a whole lot more interesting as far as I am concerned. However, wait until the man that I love most on the Tour apart from Federer comes back, Juan Martin del Potro, then we will know what we are talking about. Man, I love that forehand. A thing of beauty.
