Patrick McEnroe and Cliff Drysdale said that winning the WTF final was more important for Roger Federer than Rafael Nadal. It showed. The first two sets, split between the two men by the identical 6-3 score, were exciting. The third set saw Rafa staying back while Federer came in more often. There can only be one result when that happens, especially on an indoor court.
In their last match as a team Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor defeated another team making their final appearance, Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi.
At long last the 2010 ATP season is over. The Exhibition season begins now and Abu Dhabi is a few weeks away.
I'm not going to be posting much. There is always tennis news and if something big happens of course I'll be posting it. See you all soon.

Sunday's Stars
by Savannah

They say revenge is a dish best served cold. I'm not sure what Elena Dementieva would say about that. Saturday's semi final saw her usher a lackluster Serena Williams to the exit door bringing about an all Russian final between herself and Maria Sharapova who had outlasted another Russian, Alisa Kleybanova to make the final. I could go on and on about the commentators constantly talking about how tired Maria was, of course she was tired after playing the night match but it would have been nice for them to focus some attention on Elena. I got on the Elena bandwagon early in the year but she seemed to lose her way. Time will tell if she is back on track.

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, left, and Nuria Llagostera Vives celebrate victory. They defeated the team of Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 2-6, 7-5, 11-9.

In Cincinnati the dominant men's doubles team of Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor again hoisted trophies in celebration of yet another victory, this time over the American team of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 3-6, 7-6(2), 15-13.

Roger Federer faced minimal opposition as he won the singles title in Cincinnati in straight sets over Novak Djokovic 6-4 and 7-5. Djokovic, who played the night semi final match never seemed to wake up. As you know I'm not a fan of either man but it would've been nice to see a competitive final.
Both tours will be in New Haven this week. Qualifying for the US Open also begins this week. The Main Draw takes place on Thursday August 27.

It Wasn't To Be

Even as the dust settled on center court at the Caja Magica after yesterday's instant classic it was clear Rafael Nadal was going to need more than luck to win the Madrid Masters Final. People forget that after that marathon in Melbourne Rafa had a day to rest. That was enough time to get the lactic acid out of his muscles and for him to be relatively fresh for the Final. With less than twenty four hours to recuperate there was no doubt the mind would be willing but the flesh would be weak.

That said Roger Federer took the opportunity presented to him and ran with it. He kept the points short so that the long rallies you usually see on a clay court didn't take place and maybe assist his opponent in gaining a rhythm. The Madrid court played more like a hard court than a clay one despite the talk before the tournament that the clay was slow. The altitude, something Rafa had talked about before the tournament assisted the hard court feel of the Championship match.
Federer needed this win, and assisted by a draw that saw him play no one who threatened him except surprisingly Andy Roddick, did what he had to do and won in straight sets. Congratulations to him and his fans.

Dinara Safina also needed to win at Madrid and did so in pretty convincing fashion over Caroline Wozniacki beating the Danish teenager in straight sets as well. There were some ugly rumors floating around after Dinara's win in Rome over fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara had been soundly criticized for her over reliance on her coach. This win put all that talk to bed. I missed the first set but during the second set I saw the type of play from Dinara that got her a marvelous come from way behind win over Maria Sharapova a couple of years ago.
Some are calling her the favorite coming into Roland Garros. I wouldn't go that far. I still feel that the women's event is going to be wide open and that an unheralded player will hoist that trophy. Still this was a convincing win today. Dinara and her fans have to be pleased.
Doubles Winners

Liesel Huber and Cara Black won the women's Doubles trophy at Madrid.
Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic won the Men's Doubles crown sweeping the French Open clay court warm ups.

Baby You Can Drive My Car...

There is Good Svetlana and there is Bad Svetlana. We haven't seen much of good Sveta for a long time. Bad Sveta seemed to be having a ball losing her last six finals but today Good Sveta got the upper hand. Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated the woman now ranked as WTA Number One, Dinara Safina, in straight sets for her first significant win in two and a half years. Congratulations Sveta and enjoy that new Porsche!
By the way just in case you thought Dinara Safina's very conciliatory statement on achieving the top ranking meant she didn't think she should have it the BBC reports the following post match comment:

The doubles pairing of Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands are starting to draw attention. The duo won the Doubles trophy at Stuttgart. Good work and congratulations to both women.
The Forgotten Tournament

Anabel Medina Garrigues won the women's title in Fes over Ekaterina Makarova. Makarova then came back to win the doubles with her partner Alisa Kleybanova. The scoreline for the doubles was 26 64 18-16.

The Glory That Was Rome...

There was a lot riding on today's Rome Final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. If you remember last year Rome was where Rafa went out in the second round to Juan Carlos Ferrero. Novak Djokovic won it all here last year and was coming into the final as defending champion. Novak also had more at stake than a title defense. He needed to win the tournament to hold on to the Number Three ranking. Rafa went on a bit of a walkabout at the end of the first set but won the tiebreaker 7-2. I guess he enjoyed his walk because he came back firing on all cylinders and won the second set 6-2.
With that victory Rafa won his fourth Rome title and his 15th Masters Shield putting him ahead of Roger Federer and two behind Andre Agassi.
Djokovic not only lost the title but as of May 11th he will be passed by Andy Murray in the rankings falling to number four. More about that situation later this week.
For now I'll just say Congratulations to Rafael.

Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor defeated Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan to win the Doubles crown at Rome. They're on a tear of their own aren't they? Congratulations Nenad and Daniel.

The Sweet Taste of Victory
by Savannah

Rafael Nadal tastes victory at Barcelona for the fifth consecutive time. Rafael defeated David Ferrer in straight sets 6-2 and 7-5. Felicitats Rafa!

Congratulations also go to Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic on their doubles win at Barcelona. The pair won in straight sets 6-3 and 7-6(7) over Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles.
Fed Cup World Group Results

It'll be the United States against Italy to decide the winner of the Fed Cup for 2009. Mary Jo Fernandez led her underdog charges to victory over the team from the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile Italy trounced Russia to make the final. In my opinion it's a toss up. The United States isn't even supposed to be in the Final.
I'll do a complete Fed Cup round up tomorrow.

Rafael Nadal is the first man to win Monte Carlo five years in a row. Some saw his falling to the terre battue in joy as an excessive celebration. Others saw it for what it was - celebrating the red dirt that he's once again taken the measure of. Congratulations to Rafael and his team.

There were American men in Monte Carlo. Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan made the finals of the doubles competition losing to the team of Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic. Congratulations to Nenad and Daniel.

Meanwhile in Barcelona defending champion Maria Kirilenko went down to defeat at the hands of journeywoman Roberta Vinci. Roberta has been playing very well of late. Congratulations to her.

German teenager Sabine Lisicki made some noise on the tour last year but her play was inconsistent and she was looked at as a work in progress by many tennisheads. Long time fans of Venus Williams looked askance at their favorite having to face Lisicki, the type of opponent that has given Venus problems in the past. After Sabine beat Venus some thought she would, like others, promptly lose her next match. Sabine had other plans though and beat Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets. And trust me she beat her. It wouldn't have mattered if Caroline had had sufficient rest. Sabine came to take names and she did.

The competition moves to the red clay of Europe now. Let's see if Sabine delivers on the promise she showed today.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova won the Doubles Championship at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Thanks to "LaBamba" over on menstennisforums for putting together this handy little cheat sheet of the schedules for the top 30 men. Andy Murray has pulled out of Marseilles already.

Kind of lays out the difficulty of the schedule doesn't it?

Rafael Nadal gets treatment on his right knee
The United Arab Emirates has refused to issue a visa to Israeli player Shahar Pe'er that would allow her to play Dubai. Here is Larry Scott's official statement.
Uh huh, right on Mr. Scott. It's not that this was unexpected but it's kinda hard to bite the hand that feeds you isn't it Larry? I'm sure you've heart the expression he who plays the piper calls the tune.
Congratulations to Nenad Zimonjic and Daniel Nestor Rotterdam 2009 Doubles Champions
Amelie Mauresmo won the Paris Indoors over Elena Dementieva. With both mothers watching from the stands both women played well but it was Amelie who held it together longer. She'd better buy her new coach Hugo Lecoq whatever his little heart desires. He brought her into the season both physically and mentally fit. Let's see what happens come Roland Garros time. At 29 this may be Amelie's last realistic chance to win the title that has eluded her all these years.

Radek Stepanek won the SAP Open in San Jose.

Stepanek, partnered with Tommy Haas, also won the doubles crown. Nice weekend for Radek.

The United Arab Emirates has refused to issue a visa to Israeli player Shahar Pe'er that would allow her to play Dubai. Here is Larry Scott's official statement.
Statement from Larry Scott, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer - Sony Ericsson WTA TourRegarding: United Arab Emirates decision to deny a Visa to Israeli Tour Professional Shahar Peer to play in the Dubai Tennis Championships
We are deeply disappointed by the decision of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) denying Shahar Peer a Visa that would permit her to enter the country to play in the Dubai Tennis Championships. Ms. Peer has earned the right to play in the tournament and it is regrettable that the UAE is denying her this right.
Following various consultations, the Tour has decided to allow the tournament to continue to be played this week, pending further review by the Tour’s Board of Directors. Ms. Peer and her family are obviously extremely upset and disappointed by the decision of the UAE and its impact on her personally and professionally, and the Tour is reviewing appropriate remedies for Ms. Peer and also will review appropriate future actions with regard to the future of the Dubai tournament. The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour believes very strongly, and has a clear rule and policy, that no host country should deny a player the right to compete at a tournament for which she has qualified by ranking.
Uh huh, right on Mr. Scott. It's not that this was unexpected but it's kinda hard to bite the hand that feeds you isn't it Larry? I'm sure you've heart the expression he who plays the piper calls the tune.

Not much to say is there? Venus let everyone know Centre Court is her house and no one, not even her sister, was going to move her out of it. Win number five. 'Nuff said.
Congratulations to both Venus and Serena for giving us a very entertaining and hard fought ladies final.

And it was so nice they did it twice. Congratulations to the Wimbledon Women's Doubles Champions for 2008.

There were other champions crowned today.

He was supposed to be washed up and ready to step aside so that someone else could take his place in the rankings. Instead he's pulled further away from the pretender and closer to the reigning champion winning 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3.
Vamos Rafa!

Returning champion Jelena Jankovic played up and coming French teenager Alize Cornet who came through qualifying to make the Italian Open Final taking out Anna Chakvetadze in her semi final. Jelena made it after Maria Sharapova withdrew with a calf injury. Jelena won easily 6-2, 6-2. Congratulations Jelena.
