Let the players play. You either step it up or you go down in flames. That is what competition is about. For Justine to follow up Jelena's comment with one of her own, no matter how circumspect says a lot about what happened.

But of course the draws are random and the seeds fall where they may. cough Something caught in my throat...coughSavannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15079111598976360942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-757702474597183495.post-40375145322037709872007-06-13T09:36:00.000-05:002007-06-13T09:36:00.000-05:00We do agree about the Draws, though. They top players who got through the toughest draws won the titles.

Middle finger extended up to the draw "gods".Craig Hickmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17336837289054015211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-757702474597183495.post-11139704954192669072007-06-13T09:34:00.000-05:002007-06-13T09:34:00.000-05:00Oh, and if this is weepig and moaning, I do it gla...Oh, and if this is weepig and moaning, I do it gladly.

I, too, am a tennis head. I watch claycourt tennis. I must. I can't weep and moan about it if I don't know what I'm weeping and moaning about, no? Patience vs. Djokovic? Schnyder vs. Sharapova? Any?

Roland Garros doesn't bore me because Americans don't make it out of the second week.

It bores me because only a handful of top players are able to play their best tennis on the stuff. It's no shock to me that Roland Garros has the most champions who can't or don't win anywhere else. For all the talk that clay is the best way to hone tennis skills, history doesn't bear that out.

There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but the facts are the facts. Roland Garros features the highest number of first-time winners of all the Slams and the most champions who don't win elsewhere.

Most top players feel like they have to overadjust and when they do, the tennis is ugly, the matches have no energy. Baseline, topspin tennis bores me.

Am I making myself more clear?

No marquee matchup this year lived up to its hype. Serena was a no show against Justine, as was Raja and Ana against the respective champions.

Rafa couldn't even celebrate like usual, so sad he made his opponent, with all the weight of history on his shoulders, feel.

On to the grass, where shotmaking counts. And quiet as its kept, it's not all about the serve or the volley. Grass has been slowed down so much, players can and do win from the baseline. Raja has won 4 Wimbledons in a row from the baseline.

Yeah, we'll always disagree about clay vs. grass. Which is what makes the world go round and round.Craig Hickmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17336837289054015211noreply@blogger.com
